“The Big Book Of Cats”の中にあったウマとネコの挿話

There’s a cat in love with my horse Harpo these days. The cat is a big old barn tom, but Harpo’s a Thoroughbred, and was pretty high-strung until the cat came around. In the morning when I go to feed him that cat is always lying in the feed bin. If Harpo lies down for a nap, the cat lies down between his front legs, and Harpo is very careful not to move them. They play hide-and-seek out in the field: Harpo nickers and lowers his nose to the grass and the cat meows and pounces. Thing is, this cat doesn’t give a hoot about any other animals- not the dog or the other cats, or even the other horses. Harpo is it. And if I go for a ride, I can lift the cat up with me and he’ll stay on the way while I hold the cat and the cat holds Harpo, holding onto the mane with his teeth.

このごろ私の馬Harpoと仲が良い一匹の猫いる。その猫は納屋暮らしの大きなオス猫、しかしHarpoはサブレッドでかなり気性が荒い。それもこの猫が出現するまでは。朝に馬に餌をやろうとして厩にいってみると、その猫はいつも餌箱に横たわっていた。Harpoが眠りのために横になると、この猫は馬の前足の間に横になる。Harpoはこの猫のじゃまにならないよう慎重だ。

馬場ではふたりはかくれんぼをする。Harpoは嘶き草に鼻を押し付ける、その猫はみゃあと鳴き突然に現れる。この猫は他の動物、イヌ、ネコ、そしてウマには無関心である。Harpoだからである。

私がHarpoに乗るときは、その猫を私の前に引き上げと、猫はそのまま乗り続ける。それで私が猫を抱き、猫はタテガミを歯で掴んでHarpoを抱くことになる。

猫について以下のような評価の言葉もある：

いくらかでも猫と過ごした誰もが知っているように、猫はヒトの心の狭さに対してとてつもなく大きな忍耐をしている。

少し長いが面白いものもある：

The great charm of cats is thier rampant egotism, their devil-may-care attitude toward responsibility, their disinclination to earn an honest dollar …… cats are disdainful of everything but their own immediate interests.

ネコの最大の魅力はかれらの際限のない利己主義であり、責任に対して無頓着な態度であり、一ドルも稼ぐことにを気にしないことであり、……..そして、ネコは目の前の興味以外には全てを無視することである。

これが人であれば最も忌むべき性格のように思えるが不思議ですね。

もう1つ

It is very inconvenient habit of kittens(Alice had once made remark) that , whatever you say to them, they always purr.

子猫たちの困った習性はこちらが何を話しかけても子猫たちはいつも喉をゴロゴロ鳴らすだけ。

猫を飼っている誰もが知っているように、だれも猫を支配することはできない。

これも猫の噺。

猫のついて実に多くの「箴言」があるが「なるほど」と思うものを一つ。

“A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.” — Writer Ernest Hemingway

「猫はあくまで正直だ。人間は時として感情を隠すが、猫はそうしない。」

もう１つ。

「普通の猫なんていない。」

 

 

先日(11/29)の新聞記事のタイトルである。

英国ケント州オーピントンで暮らす来年で27歳になる猫の話である。「存命する世界最高齢の猫」としてギネス認定された。

猫の名前はフロッシー(flossy)。毛色は茶と黒で性格は穏やか。生後数か月は野良猫だった由。その後飼い猫として暮らしている。
